The Northern Virginia Football Officials Association, Inc. (NVFOA), is a non-profit organization established to assign its members as officials and promote the game of football at the recreation, middle school, and high school levels throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.
Our main function is the training of football officials in the implementation of the mechanics and rules of the game as set forth by the governing bodies, including the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). NVFOA proudly has over 150 members who are certified to serve as field officials and clock operators. The NVFOA is a member of the Virginia High School League (VHSL), headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, with reciprocity in Maryland, Washington DC, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
The Northern Virginia Football Officials Association, Inc. was established in 1947, to develop and supply officials to the rapidly growing Northern Virginia area. Within a few years our services spread to Winchester, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Prince William, Culpeper, and Orange; as well as portions of West Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. We even became involved in college football for a brief period of time. It was soon determined that our vision should be directed to the high schools and those programs that fed into them. Since that determination, the NVFOA has become one of the premier high school officiating groups in the Washington Metro area, as well as in the state of Virginia. We are proud of our heritage.
The NVFOA serves more than 50 high schools in the Northern Virginia and greater Washington DC area. We also will occasionally work with the Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL), Loudoun Youth Football Assosciation (LYFA), and other youth football leagues in Northern Virginia to officiate games and to support development of new officials. The NVFOA is truly dedicated to promote the betterment of football from the youth through high school levels.
